The City of Hartford has over 900 hydrants, and the Harford Water Utility is required by the Department of Natural Resources to “flush” each hydrant annually. In Hartford, every hydrant is flushed in the spring.
This year, our flushing program will begin South of Hwy 60 on April 24th through May 17th and North of Hwy 60 May 15th through June 9th. All flushing takes place between the hours of 7 AM and 3 PM.
There are many benefits from flushing hydrants which includes enhancing the water quality by removing sediments form the mainline pipes, making sure there is ample water flow for fighting fires and it also confirms that the fire hydrants are operating correctly.
During the hydrant flushing, some customers may experience temporary discoloration of water. If this happens to you, you can turn on an outside spigot or a cold water tap in the lowest level of your home, and let the water flow until it clears. The discoloration is caused by harmless mineral deposits which settle in the water main and are stirred during the flushing activity.
Since flushing of mains is a necessary maintenance for our water system, we earnestly solicit your cooperation during this period of temporary inconvenience. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact our office at 262-670-3710.
